Amazon Comprehend is AWS’s NLP service designed to extract insights from unstructured text. It can detect language, perform sentiment analysis, identify entities (such as people, places, organizations, dates), extract key phrases, analyze syntax, and even detect Personally Identifiable Information. These capabilities align directly with pulling out substantive insights from document content, like understanding sentiment in a contract, listing mentioned entities, or pulling out important phrases.

Other services serve different purposes. Amazon Lex is for building conversational interfaces and chatbots. Amazon Kendra focuses on enterprise search and ranking across collections of documents, using NLP to understand queries and retrieve relevant results. Amazon Fraud Detector specializes in identifying fraudulent patterns rather than extracting information from text. While NLP features may appear in some of these, none are as focused on extracting structured insights from the content of documents as Comprehend.
